Customised Braces
Braces have come a long way in recent years thanks to advances in orthodontic technology and techniques. At Gladesville Orthodontics we use innovative digital scanning to capture patient records and use this to design Insignia braces, a customized bracing system.
Insignia differs from traditional bracing systems, which use mass designed brackets, as it customises braces and wires for every patient to ensure accuracy, effectiveness and a truly customised smile. Insignia uses computer software to transform a patient’s treatment plan into a virtual 3D model, allowing the orthodontist to start with the end in sight and calculate your optimal bite and smile. Insignia designs customised brackets for each individual tooth; no one bracket is the same.
There are several benefits to being treated with Insignia including:
- Precisely calculated tooth movement
- Accurate bracket placement
- Reduction in treatment time
- More comfortable treatment
Our orthodontists combine the advantages of Insignia with the design and benefits of Damon braces.

EARLY TREATMENT
The benefits of early orthodontic treatment.
The Australian Society of Orthodontics recommends that children should visit an orthodontist between six to eight years of age. Gladesville Orthodontics offers specialist early assessments to address and monitor any potential orthodontic issues.
By evaluating your child at a young age, we can isolate the concern to Phase One treatment, adjusting or correcting the issue with growth. Identifying and solving an orthodontic issue early not only helps your child, but also saves you future time and money.
There are early visible symptoms of potential orthodontic issues. If your child has crowded or misaligned teeth, speech difficulties or sucks their thumb past the age of five, this may indicate a need for treatment.
We use a range of additional orthodontic appliances, most commonly for our younger Phase One patients. These are generally focused on improving the alignment of the jaw and laying the foundation for future orthodontic treatment.
There are many different orthodontic appliances designed to address different concerns. The right option for your child depends on their unique circumstance and can be determined by your orthodontist after a thorough assessment.

There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment. In fact, with the many invisible methods available today, more and more adults are seeking comprehensive cures. These include clear, ceramic braces and Invisalign plastic aligners.
Properly positioned teeth are far easier to clean and care for. In addition to improved chewing and speech, a correct bite plays an important role in reducing future wear of the teeth and stress on the supporting bone and jaw joints.
Adult treatment ranges from simple cosmetic correction to more complex problems – like tooth loss, tooth wear and jaw discrepancies. Our specialist orthodontists will often co-ordinate treatment with your general dentist and other dental specialists, optimising the aesthetic and functional outcomes.
Contrary to some fears, your regular lifestyle is minimally affected during treatment. Most adults enjoy enormous support and encouragement from family and friends when choosing to undergo treatment.

RETENTION

Essential Orthodontic Retention
All patients require orthodontic retention after braces or aligners, as retention is the most important aspect of your orthodontic treatment.
After orthodontic treatment is complete, elastic tissues in the gums attempt to pull your teeth back to their original positions. Retainers are used to reduce and halt these undesirable movements, allowing time for the soft tissues to adapt to new tooth positions.
A common misconception about orthodontic treatment is that the end results are permanent. This is not the case. Scientific studies have shown teeth move constantly throughout life as a natural aspect of the aging process.
We strongly encourage all patients to continue orthodontic retention for as long as they desire a straight smile.

Types of Retainers
At the end of your orthodontic treatment, Dr Poon will bond fixed retainers to the back of the upper and lower teeth, securing them in position. Fixed retainers are made of stainless steel, allowing regular brushing and flossing, and designed to remain in the mouth for an extended time period.
You will also be given a removable retainer to wear over your fixed wire retainer. This is required to stabilise your arch shape and occlusion at the end of your orthodontic treatment. Generally, you are asked to wear these removable retainers at night over a twelve-month period.
Your general dentist is able to examine and clean around the retainer, as normal.

ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY
Orthognathic surgery is performed on the jaws to align them in the correct position.
ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY
Orthognathic surgery is performed on the jaws to align them in the correct position.
This expands a patient’s ability to chew, speak and breathe, additionally improving facial appearance. Jaw problems that may be corrected by orthognathic surgery include jaws that are too large, too small, too far forward, too far back, or crooked. There may also be a significant gap between the upper and lower front teeth.
When a patient needs orthognathic surgery, it is usually performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment – helping to correct an occlusion issue commonly called the ‘bite’ (contact of the teeth between the upper and lower jaws during chewing or when jaws are closed).
Dr Poon will assess your individual needs, determining whether orthognathic surgery is required in your presenting situation. If so, you’ll receive a referral to the appropriate oral maxillo-facial surgeon for your needs.
